Picky Eaters: Is it healthy to be normal?

How many times in your life have you been told that something which concerned you was “normal”–even though you felt it wasn’t healthy? Have you ever been told not to worry about a health concern that you were sure just wasn’t right?

I’m over here raising my hand. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Well, maybe not a thousand. But many significant times.

This is similar to the post about the impossible: Just because a practitioner or a modality does not have an answer for it does not make it impossible.

And, just because something is normal does not make it healthy. A lot of people suffering from it does not mean that it is healthy or that you have to suffer also.

For instance, it is commonly advised that nursing mothers not worry about how frequently their babies poop because infrequent stool is common. [1] Same with diaper blowouts. [2]

And how many of us parents have heard that someone is just a picky eater?

Story #1

When my third child was a few years old, he radically reduced his dietary preferences. Luckily, I had a few things going in my favor:

  • I had read an article in which it was said that the average person requires 12 taste exposures before accepting or even liking a novel taste. I tried it out with my older picky eaters–they had to eat 3 bites of a novel food. One kid took about 8 exposures before some of her old “no way” meals became favorites, and the other kid took about 16 exposures before he started asking for curry. So I knew at that point that exposure was a key.
  • My naturopath told me kids naturally get pickier between ages 3-5 and that the key was to continue presenting them with a range of foods and to not label them as, “Oh, Johnny only eats _____.”
  • I was drawn to learn about what is now one of my favorite modalities, Gemmos, and I studied with Lauren Hubele, who focuses strongly on digestive health as foundational to all health. If we are not eliminating properly, our body will use “emergency exits” like skin, mucus, etc. And Lauren declared what all other practitioners had denied to me for all those years of child-rearing: blowouts are an indication of digestive issues, and even breastfed babies should poop multiple times a day. [3]

The end to that story is that I did all three of the above, and within two months, my latest picky eater was eating very healthy foods and went from insisting on only the mildest flavors to being a flavor maniac.

So, what does this have to do with a dog, Pamela?! I’m getting to it!

Story #2

We brought a Great Dane into our family a year ago. It’s a dream come true for me. I’ve wanted one for soooo long.

I’m going to shorten this section of his story to tell you that his digestive system was touchy! He could not change between foods without getting loose stool, and as a result he was very reluctant to eat a varied diet. There were numerous reasons why that was a problem. But, guess what all the experts told me? They said, “Great Danes are picky eaters.”

Now, you know me well enough to know whether that caused me to say, “Oh, okay, I guess there is nothing I can do about that!” or …. “Let’s just see about that!”

I sought the advice of two colleagues who are experts in Gemmos for dogs and started him on just a drop/day of Fig, then added Silver Lime. Then moved to twice daily. No change.

I had had Walnut in the back of my mind for a while when I came across this amazing, fantastic, incredible resource about dog poop. With pictures!! I’m not kidding. Not illustrations. Photos. [4]. From that, Walnut was confirmed, so I added a drop or two to his daily SL / Fig combo [I just put them all in a bottle and gave him a few drops twice daily].

Within a couple of weeks, two things happened–his poop changed from all yellow to half yellow [first half was brown, second half was yellow, and ideal is all brown] + we no longer had to doctor his food in order to get him to eat it.

I left him at that number of daily drops for a month but there was no further improvement, so then I doubled it. And voila! He can change foods. Not always eagerly, and not without a tiny bit of digestive disturbance, but we are in early stages yet and I suspect that before long, it’ll be a thing of the past. And, his poop is the right color and consistency, so I know he is digesting it better and that is a huge relief, especially considering that he is still so young and growing.

Now, let me be clear, I did not artificially create some sort of food acceptance thing or suppression of symptoms. I helped his gut heal.

And with a healthier gut comes healthier food choices and healthier nutrient absorption and assimilation. Plus a lot more ease and pleasure. The health benefits going forward are likely more numerous than I can even anticipate.

Oh, how I love proving people wrong, especially about health constraints!

So if you answered “yes” to the questions at the beginning, I’m here to raise my fist in the air for you. And if you kept searching, I’m here to applaud you for looking for answers, for seeking second opinions, for not accepting “don’t worry” as an answer when your gut is sure you should. I am here to shout, “Hurrah!” for not equating common, which is what “normal” is, with healthy. For seeking a level of health that is optimal for you.

Just after I wrote this post, a story showed up in my news feed about a teenager who literally went blind from having a diet that was not adequate. Here’s the link.

The day after I wrote this blog, our puppy got crazy sick from eating a washcloth and a rotten carcass. That was more than two months ago, and his road to repair has been enlightening, to say the least! An Answer for Everything

My toddler’s neck was red and swelling when I called the pediatrician. The nurse practitioner suggested Advil and that I swipe his neck with a credit card to make certain the bee’s stinger had been removed completely.

While he screamed, I scraped at the sting location with a credit card and evaluated my options. Advil would just make him vomit. Having no other option short of the emergency room, I [reluctantly!] tried homeopathy for the first time.

Mosquito Bite Prevention & Relief

If you have trouble with mosquito bites, I imagine that you’ve been searching the internet like crazy! I know I was! I tried everything–and I was already studying homeopathy when my kids started developing giant lumps in reaction to mosquito bites. [In fact, one such reaction is how my first topical remedy was born!]

So, here’s the rundown of what works for most people as well as what worked for our family in dealing with the excessive reactions to mosquito bites.

The 80%

If you’re lucky enough to get a simple itch when it comes to mosquito bites, they probably still drive you crazy!

  • Typically in homeopathy, Ledum is recommended for mosquito bites.
  • I find that for minor reactions to mosquito bites, my First Aid Oil [included in the G4 Kit] does the trick.
  • Another option is Black Currant gemmo extract, which many of my clients already have on-hand because it’s so great for inflammation in general. You can just apply a drop of that to the affected area; for many people, it also works like a charm.

The Lucky Few

For those whose bodies really really do not like mosquito bites, this is the regimen that works for us:

Increase Vitamin B-12 consumption in general. You can increase your consumption of a fuller spectrum B via Nutritional Yeast [I keep it in a shaker bottle on the dining table and put it under or on top of every savory food]. If you prefer a supplement, we use methylcobalamin. I like two brands because my kids find them palatable and they work: sublingual tablets in 5 mg by Source Naturals, and the liquid by Pure Encapsulations [which is more expensive and less widely available].

In general, the B-12 approach seems to have reduced the frequency of bites and the severity of the reaction in combination with the foundational homeopathy and Gemmos they’re taking. My kids aren’t eager to eat nutritional yeast on their food, but after their first round of mosquito bites of the Summer, they remember that it sure is better than all those itchy bumps!

When they do get bites, as soon as possible, I start my protocol:

  • Start with the First Aid Oil applied to the area. Remember, relief is not immediate but arrives in short order [typically within 3-5 minutes but definitely within 10 to 15 minutes you should be feeling the ease].
  • Take a dose of B-12 5 mg.
  • Take a dose of Black Currant gemmo to lessen the reaction [also called Ribes Nigrum].
  • If you cannot get to the bites immediately with the above protocol, or if for some other reason the reaction is intense [forming lumps or crazy itchy despite doing the above 3], I add a dose of my Stings combination.

I repeat doses as needed–usually 1-3 times daily for 2-3 days. I always do the combination, though: When the bites start itching again, they get all 3 [or 4] things.

That’s it. That has changed so much for us and brought a pretty remarkable ease to our lives. I hope it does for you and yours, too.

When, Why, & How to REPLENISH

Use Replenish to refresh, regain, rejuvenate.

Oh how I adore this remedy combination! It’s subtle and yet it can really lift our vitality to where it feels like we’ve moved through a portal to a new state of readiness.

Sometimes, it resolves the issue, sometimes it supports the resolution. No matter what, it’s almost always of use. So let’s break it down so you know just how to use it to maximize your life!

When, why, and how do I use Replenish?

Whenever you are asking a lot of your body, add Replenish to your regimen.

  • Recuperating. You’ve been through exams, a competition, the flu and you’re wiped, zonked, cooked.
    • How often? Add this to your water bottle for a couple of days.
  • Stamina. Prevent the need to recuperate! If you know you’re headed into exams, a competition, or travel and you want to make sure that you do not end up wiped, zonked, cooked, add this to your water bottle while you’re engaged in the taxing activity.
    • How often? If you are using it daily, you can do that for 2 weeks maximum before you should take a break for a few days and restart.
  • Training. Athletes like using Replenish to maintain even stamina [as an alternative to ‘energy’ drinks and bars] during training.
    • How often? You can add this to your water bottle once or twice a week for that added support. If you are in intense training preceding a season or competition, you can add it to your water bottle daily for upto 2 weeks.

Can I take it as pills?

Yes, you can take the pills straight–one capful is a dose.

So then why do I constantly suggest you add it to your water? Because when you need it, you typically need that subtle, frequent dosing that water dosing supplies.

How do I add it to my water bottle?

It’s as simple as adding a single capful to a water bottle. With this remedy and its purpose, one capful will be sufficient for upto a quart/liter of drinking water.

What’s in it?

Replenish is a combination of remedies originated as cell salts.

We use cell salts to nourish the cells, rehabilitate, restore, rejuvenate, re-…lots. When there is an imbalance, not enough of this or too much of that, cell salts can restore balance. We use the individual remedies for a wide range of issues, such as inflammation, mucus issues, cramps, elasticity [too much or too little], acidity, teeth/hair/nails/bones, insomnia.

In this combination, however, they serve to simply support the underlying restoration your body is craving.

When should I not use it?

1 Step to Prevent the Flu, Stop It, or Resolve It

I was pregnant with my third child when the first round of H1N1 hit the U.S. in the Spring of 2009. I laid in bed for 5 days [that is unheard of for me!] with a fever. I had all of the symptoms and I cannot say it was fun! I basically drank 7-up [also a big No for me] to stay alive. Finally, at Day 5, I tried some homeopathic remedies from my Helios kit–to no avail. Then, on Day 6, I decided to try Anas Barbariae.

Voila! It was like the clouds parted! I still recall leaving the house for the first time to watch my son’s horseback riding lesson and being in complete awe of how good it felt to not be so sick! I put a dose of it into an 8-ounce water bottle and sipped it for several days. A few sips [each sip is a dose] on the first day, then 2 sips, then 1 sip daily, until I was free of the flu symptoms.

Since then, I have kept that remedy in my purse, backpack, car, teenager’s room, bathrooms, jacket pockets.  It’s everywhere because, you’ve heard me say this before … the sooner we get started on healing, the easier / better / faster it will be. 

Some people even use Anas Barbariae preventively during flu season, taking it on a regular basis as a little immune refresher course.  

 It’s so versatile, I decided to include the remedy in my G4 Kit.  It’s the one marked Flu.

When do I take it?

My general preference is that it is taken only as needed, but ideally it is taken ASAP after exposure or after onset of symptoms. Onset of symptoms means that first sore or scratchy throat not relieved by water, that feeling that you’re more tired than you should be, congestion that seemed to come out of nowhere.

The other time to use it is after exposure to illness–i.e., when you’ve been around someone who is sick. You sat next to someone who was sick on an airplane or train. You are at a competition or conference with people who are sick. Someone in your abode falls ill. Sometimes, a single dose will do it. But, if it is important that a person stay well, I might recommend a dose for each day the person is exposed to a contagion.

How do I take it?

From the G4 Kit, each capful is a dose–just tip the remedy into the cap then from the cap in to your mouth to dissolve there. One dose usually is sufficient if you use it preventively or at the very earliest sign of illness.

However, if you do take ill, I suggest the following method:

  • Take one dose as above–a single capful dissolved in the mouth. Typically, we notice improvement within 10-30 minutes in an acute ailment.
  • If that dose helped, you can [can, not must–see below] switch to water dosing*: Pour a capful of remedy in to 4 oz. [half a cup] of drinking water. Ideally, you will have a straw or spout on the vessel of water. When the remedy dissolves in the water, give it a swirl or stir. You now have what I call remedy water.
  • Each sip of the remedy water is a dose of remedy. Take a dose as needed. Typically, you will want a dose every 4-6 hours, maximum. Keep it bedside incase you need it at night.
  • Remember the concept of minimum dose and only take as many doses as you need to maintain forward progress. That means that as you get better, you will need fewer and fewer doses.
  • When you are well and/or done with your remedy water, make sure that you either dispose of the vessel that held the remedy water or wash it with very hot water.

Why use water dosing? Can’t I just take the pills?

*Yes, you absolutely can continue taking the pills for each dose. Just keep on taking one capful per dose, as needed:
Typically, you will want a dose every 4-6 hours, maximum. Keep it bedside incase you need it at night. Remember the concept of minimum dose and only take as many doses as you need to maintain forward progress. That means that as you get better, you will need fewer and fewer doses.

Why do I suggest water dosing, then? Primarily because it takes one dose and makes it in to many doses. That saves the other doses in your vial for another occasion or other members of your household. If that is not an issue for you, then dry dosing [taking the pills] can be much easier and more convenient.

Prevent a Concussion in Less than a Minute

Brains. We need them. Ideally in top form.

So it is no surprise that athletes, parents of athletes, and the general public is disconcerted by the frequency of concussions. In fact, it is a top reason for sports-related E.R. visits. [1]

And what can homeopathy do about it?!

Homeopathy is excellent at reducing inflammation and swelling.* It also has the advantage of being extremely portable so you can take it ASAP after the offending injury. In fact, that’s a key reason my G4 Kit is so small. With a small kit, we can take it most anywhere, so we have access to the remedies we need when we need them. The sooner we get started on our healing, the better. So take a dose while en route to the E.R.

Head Injuries was born of the desire to prevent head injuries from resulting in concussions.

The G4 Kit contains two remedies for emergency situations–Major Injuries and Head Injuries. For a long time, I just used Major Injuries for serious head injuries, and First Aid / First Aid Oil for bumps to the head [and you still can–see below]. But a PRO client of mine had a friend who suffered a concussion. Seeing the fallout for his friend, my client asked for a remedy for concussion to have on-hand. Of course I gave it to him. But I decided then and there that I’d rather all my clients have a specific Head Injuries remedy to prevent the injury from developing into a concussion!

What happens after I take it?

Here’s one person’s experience using Head Injuries:

I had an out of body experience for only a short period of time probably seconds. Although, when I first fell off, I had been sitting on the table backwards so I hit the back of my head. At first, it felt like a throbbing headache except it was radiating across my head. It went deep into my head and stayed like that for a little bit. Then, eventually I got the Head Injuries and First Aid Oil; it reduced to where it just felt like a large bruise.

Other clients report that the pain and swelling [if there is any] subsides within 5-15 minutes from a single dose. Those who have begun driving to the E.R. found that the upon arrival, mentals were great while pain and swelling was completely gone, thereby negating the need for further intervention.

Clients also report something beautiful: Because the pain disappeared so quickly, so easily, and without a whole lot of hoopla, the athlete suffered no residual fear of the activity that gave rise to the injury in the first place. What’s in it?

It contains homeopathic Ledum in high potency. Ledum is highly regarded in homeopathy for its benefit to a person who has suffered an injury to the head. [Incidentally, it also is beneficial for black eyes for the same reason.] Head Injuries also contains Arnica in high potency, which is great at reducing swelling, bruising.

Thus far, the reports I have had from clients are all positive that they are able to avert a concussion by using the Head Injuries remedy. One client also used the First Aid Oil from the G4 Kit on the cheeks of the person with the injury to give an extra assist in bringing down inflammation. The added advantage of this choice is that my First Aid remedies include Hypericum, which is beneficial for nerve damage. If you suspect nerve damage, consider either adding the First Aid remedy or the First Aid Oil.

My Major Injuries remedy simply contains Arnica. This is a high potency Arnica that is used, for example, by plastic surgeons to reduce swelling, bruising, etc. that result from considerable injuries to the body. It’s well regarded in homeopathy for its ability to bring down swelling and is often used in hospital settings around the world as a standard for brain injuries. If you are out of Head Injuries or for some reason only have Major Injuries with you, it’s definitely worth taking for any significant injury for that very reason–reduce the swelling and inflammation, and buy yourself some time to get to the E.R.

Who needs it?

Head Injuries is for a significant head injury.

This is an injury where the E.R. crosses your mind, at the very least. Usually, you will see that the injury caused at least a momentary droop in consciousness. You might even call 9-1-1 or begin your journey to the E.R. and dose en route if you can.

How do I take it?

Just pour a few pellets into your mouth.

  • If you are collected enough, you can pour them from the vial into the cap and then into the person’s mouth. Try to get them under the tongue or in the cheek to dissolve before they are swallowed.
  • If you are shaking, frazzled, in gloves, or in any other way unable to pour a capful, just shake a few pellets into the mouth of the person with the head injury.

Typically, only a single dose is needed. If you feel further doses are needed, you definitely should be under the care of a physician and a professional homeopath.

Help for a Sprained Ankle

If you have sports in your life, this definitely is one for you!  I sprained my ankle recently, and I healed it rather quickly and easily using mostly homeopathy.  That helped me quickly get back to my full-time responsibilities and, more importantly, living my fullest, highest life.

Of course, sharing is what I do, so the day-by-day follows the video, and a printable PDF gives you a handy, fileable reminder of the basic how-to.

DAY 1

The first thing was to pour my Arnica Spray on it–that’s Arnica 200c dissolved in water.

Then I took Arnica 1M as well as the Sprains & Strains combination, which contains Arnica 200, Rhus Tox 200, and Ruta 200.

It became clear that I needed the higher potency of Arnica, so I ended up using only Arnica 1M for Days 1 & 2.

I kept my leg elevated and as immobile as possible, wrapped my ankle, and I did not ice it.

DAY 2

I continued to use Arnica 1M as dictated by pain, wrapped my ankle, and kept it elevated most of the time.

I also went to the chiropractor, because it felt like a bone was out of place.  She found two bones out of place and set them back to their allotted positions.  That did bring some extra relief, and I was glad I had gone in for the adjustment because I felt my body had one less point of healing to accomplish on its own.

That night, I realized that I had not put any further topical treatment on it so I used my First Aid Spray, which contains Arnica as well as Calendula and Hypericum 200c.  I used that because I had it handy.  Given an easy choice, I would have used only the Arnica topically.

When I awoke in the middle of the night to help my daughter, I realized on my way back to bed that I had walked and not crawled to help her — and that I felt fine!

DAY 3

So, I was surprised to awaken in the morning and feel pain again.

Fortunately, I realized that the X Factor here was the topical, so I used that again starting on Day 3, to great effect.

Knowing that two days on the Arnica 1M was sufficient, I forced myself to quit, even though I was a tad worried because it had helped so incredibly with the pain the first two days.  I thus switched at that point to my Sprains & Strains combo–200c of Rhus Tox, Arnica, and Ruta, both internally and externally for one day.

I was surprised on Day 3 to be able to bear weight on my ankle and to be able to flex it.  My husband, who played a lot of soccer and thus suffered his fair share of ankle injuries, was amazed to see me flexing my ankle already.  I was mighty pleased myself.

DAY 4

I switched to only the topical application of my Sprains & Strains combination.  I find that the 200c topical lasts 24 hours per application, so I stuck with that.

About the Topical:  I used a topical application that I made in olive oil, but you could also use the remedies in water [and in lower potency, more often], if that is what you have on hand.  You could add a few drops of oil to your water to help it ‘stick’ to the surface of your skin, too.  If you would like purchase a topical preparation from me, that’s available too.

I continued to improve.  So did my ankle ;].

DAY 8

I began tapering off my use of the topical to every 2 days, then as needed.

Current Stomach Bug

A wee stomach bug seems to be making its rounds.  Depending on health, its manifestation may be horrendous or slight.

Moving Past Fear

There are so many ways to move past fear, and so very many levels of fear.

If a low level of fear is keeping you from doing something that you know is right for you, that you know in your heart you should do, consider this technique shown to me by Spirit this week:

Imagine the scenario that gives rise to the fear in you.  Imagine it unfolding in the manner that you most fear.

Now repeat, repeat, repeat.  Repeat until you imagine it unfolding in a manner that doesn’t bother you–or, even better, it unfolds in a manner to which you respond positively.
