Skin Oil

My skin oil is becoming a thing on its own, though I’ve mentioned it in my skincare and bites-and-stings posts.

This, though, is the thorough low-down on my combo.

SkinOilIngredientsIngredients

I purchase both ingredients from Mountain Rose Herbs:
Organic Hazelnut Oil
Helichrysum Essential Oil

Recipe

My base recipe is one ounce bottles [that’s about 30 mL] with 20-25 drops [that’s around 1 mL] of helichrysum and the remainder organic hazelnut oil.  Here are some other breakdowns of that recipe:

4 oz. bottle of hazelnut oil + 4 mL of helichrysum essential oil [if you wanted to make a large batch and then dole it out from there]

5 mL roller bottle starts with 6 drops of helichrysum then top it off with hazelnut oil

10 mL roller bottle starts with 7-8 drops of helichrysum then filled with hazelnut oil

Bottles

SkinOilSetBagI originally made this recipe for my skincare regimen–it’s amazing at reducing blemishes and creating more radiant skin.  So, I always make the one-ounce bottles for the bathroom.  I have used both spritzer and pump styles, though always amber glass, and I typically get mine from Specialty Bottle.

Once I realized the usefulness of the oil, though, I began carrying it with me in a small amber glass roller bottle with stainless steel roller which I bought via Amazon Smile [I support Homeopaths without Borders with my purchases; who do you support?], though I see that Specialty Bottle is now carrying clear glass rollers with plastic rollers.  You can get them in lots of different sizes and other colors via Amazon, too.

Uses

I use it on just about any surface ailment, and almost always with at least some benefit.  The most profound benefits have been on blemishes, spider bite, mild scratches, and other people report benefits from other skin ailments too–especially the mysterious ones!

The Quick Six: Bites and Stings

The final bit of your Quick Six ensemble would be something to address bites and stings, which in fact is what brought my family to homeopathy in the first place.

The Remedies:

The most frequently recommended remedies for bites and stings are as follows:

Arnica – especially if there is bruising
Apis – especially for bee stings
Hypericum – especially when there is nerve pain
Ledum – for puncture wounds including bites and stings

Once again, I’d suggest remedies in the 6c – 200c range.  You can order a combination from Helios, make a combination yourself [see below], or pick the one you feel you’re most likely to need and use that.  If you are going to do the latter, consider that both Arnica and Hypericum would be in your Cuts & Bumps / First Aid vial or spray.

Because I carry only Arnica [200c or 1M] on occasions when I can’t carry a lot, I had only that with me when my husband was stung on his palm by something mysterious in the ocean.  It helped for a few hours, but after washing the dishes that evening, he started experiencing pain shooting up his arm.  I recalled that pain moving up the nerve toward the heart is dangerous, so I urged him to go to the Emergency Room.  He was reluctant, so I pulled out some Hypericum 1M and dissolved it in a small glass of water for him.  After the first dose, the pain withdrew and localized again.  He took another dose during the night, and again another dose in the morning, and that was that.  Whew!

How to make a combination yourself:

Put the pillules that you want to include between two spoons and crush them.  Then stir them up, and voila, you’ve made a combination.

Use it topically:

Don’t forget that you can use this topically too.  Here’s a reminder on how to make a topical out of remedy pillules.  In fact, it was an inspired topical application of Arnica 200c to a massive mosquito bite reaction that taught me the wonders of topical homeopathics in potency.

Non-homeopathic options:

Plumeria:  If you are someplace where Plumeria grow, you can break-off a Plumeria leaf and apply the milk to the site as quickly as possible.  This works quickly and effectively, much to my surprise and relief!

Helichrysum Essential Oil:  I recently was stung by a spider [this kind].  It stung me quickly while running away, luckily, but it was hurting by nightfall.  I decided to apply some of my face oil [hazelnut oil with helichrysum in it] to it, and I was surprised that the spreading redness and pain had diminished by morning.  One more application in the morning, and voila, it was no longer uncomfortable.   I am pretty sure that I never applied a homeopathic, only the face oil.

Meanwhile, my daughter had 3 mosquito bites [she reacts big time!], one of which was not responding to our treatments [why, we don’t know!], so I decided to go back to my original … Arnica spray, then had the idea to add the face oil on top of it.  Voila, the swelling went down and the itchiness subsided.  I think I applied again that night and maybe again the next day before it was fully resolved.

Tried it again [Arnica spray + Helichrysum in hazelnut oil] on my husband, who caught it immediately after being stung and the results were complete relief immediately.

In looking into it, only Helichrysum [and Arnica, of course] are known to be helpful with bites and stings.

Now I keep some of my face oil in a tiny amber roller bottle in my purse.  I use it for a variety of skin complaints from scratches to stings.

To make a batch for my face oil dispenser, I put one dropperful of the Helichrysum [from a 1/2 oz. bottle] in 1 oz. of hazelnut oil [links above to Mountain Rose Herbs, where I purchase them].  If you buy the tiny roller bottles, I fill them all up and have them on-hand to give away.  People love ’em!

PREVENTION!

Homeopathics:  And finally, preventing mosquito bites.  Mozi-Q has come up with a homeopathic formula that prevents a whole host of bites [lice, ticks, mosquitoes …].  These are low-potency homeopathic combination tablets that you take half an hour before potential exposure and whose effects are expected to last a few hours.  The cool thing about the internal is that you have complete coverage [you can’t miss a spot] that remains through sweat, swim, sunscreen, etc.

Staphysagria is the remedy that prevents mosquito bites [Staphysagria is made from delphinium, and mosquitoes don’t like delphinium].  We have used Staphysagria 6x internally with success, and we also have used it topically for prevention [successfully, though they will find the spots that you miss if you’re in a mosquito rich area].

Other:  I have read and been told that liver tonics / bitters and vitamin B’s [like in nutritional yeast] are good mosquito preventatives.  Constipation also equals a sluggish liver, apparently, so regularity is important!

My Personal Energy Therapist [Can Be Yours Too]

For [less than, most likely] the price of one massage [they cost $7-11 ea. and 2-5 pieces will get you far], you can get a lifetime of relief from all kinds of ailments, from stiff or tight muscles to headaches.  These little gems have proven their worth in our house, much to my amazement and complete delight.

They save me time, they save me money, and they give me relief, comfort, and therein plenty of joy.

Processed with MoldivI just tape or clip [in my hair for a headache] them into place and voila, aaaaaah.

Where to get them:

I have bought my clear quartz crystal spheres from Gemisphere and Starlight.  Other crystal shops also carry them, and they are available via Etsy too.

How to use them:

I generally simply place them at the site of the discomfort or where I think the discomfort originates and where its reach ends.  So, for instance, if my forearm hurt, I might put a couple of crystals at my shoulder and one in the palm of my hand.  On the other hand, for a headache I’d most likely create a circle of spheres around the part of my head that hurts.

I leave them on for 20-30 minutes, sometimes longer.  When they start to irritate, or if I’m headed out the door, I take them off!

Gemisphere states that clear quartz brings life energy and balance to the area where it is placed.  In general, I understand that clear quartz dispels problematic energy and amplifies beneficial energies.

I also use them to clear my chakras.  Gemisphere has instructions for several therapies as well–chakras, metabolism, eyes, and awareness.  They also state that wearing a clear quartz crystal necklace after the therapy can help you hold the healing benefits of the therapy for longer.

How to take care of them:

Healing crystals must be cleared and re-charged.  Gemisphere has a variety of recommendations for clearing and rejuvenating crystals and gemstones.

I actually clear and re-charge mine with each use, though that is not generally considered necessary.

My preferred method is to put them in the sun, because that clears and rejuvenates them nicely.  A direct sun shining through a clear quartz crystal could start a fire, so you have to be careful with that.  Gemisphere recommends only 20 minutes in the sun for that reason.

I set mine in a glass bowl in the sunshine on a windowsill and sometimes take the bowl outside on a nice afternoon.

If we are sunshine-free for a while, I clear them under running water prayerfully until I sense that the spheres are clear [about 30 seconds].  You can also put it in a bentonite clay [detoxifying] bath.

Enjoy!

FYI–Coupon on Therapeutic Gemstones

One of my favorite sources for gemstones, as you know, is Gemisphere.  They have introduced a new, smaller size of sphere [6 mm], and they’re offering $25 off all 6 mm necklaces until tomorrow with the code HELLO6.  Free shipping on all gemstones too.

One of the best deals, and one of the most fundamental gemstone necklaces, in my opinion, is Black Onyx and the smallest one is $45, which means you’d pay $20 for it with the coupon.

Black Onyx is fantastic for grounding, and is therefore really helpful for almost everyone, including kids.

Here’s a quick story about why I fell head-over-heels for this stone:

My daughter was young, and she would cry constantly unless I was in the backseat of the car with her.  I was ready to feel like an adult–to sit in the front seat next to my husband!  So, one day, after a hike, I was inspired [Divinely, no doubt] to request my husband’s onyx necklace.  I placed it over the back of the front passenger headrest, in front of my daughter then hopped into the front passenger seat.

Would you believe that she was perfectly contented up there?

If you are intuitively gifted or have a child who is, this is an amazing stone!  Even having it nearby [say, on you!] is helpful.  I recently gifted one of these necklaces to a mom, and she said her children call it the “magic necklace” because of its properties.

I agree!

A Good Remedy for Thick Mucous + How to Use Homeopathic Combinations and Syrups

There’s a flu going around just now that responds to Oscillococcinum initially–also if you take a microdose [just a few granules] after exposure and before onset, you can stave it off completely–and then moves into a congestion stage with frontal sinus pain, post-nasal drip, and/or cough.

I’m a fan of Kali Iodatum for a lot of these thick mucous – cough situations.  It is not in the homeopathic literature with that kind of description, exactly.  Boiron says it’s for colds with frontal sinus pain.  Similisan has it in a mucus syrup for cold, fever, sneezing, runny nose, and head congestion.

But I actually find it helpful in situations where one might consider Kali Bichromicum but Kali Bich does not help or where one is more mucous than that.  In a lot of ways, it is actually my go-to for a mucous cough.

Combinations:  Useful, and Here’s a Trick:

Similisan's Mucous Syrup Active Ingredients List + Kali Iodatum in 30c and 200c.
Similisan’s Mucous Syrup Active Ingredients List + Kali Iodatum in 30c and 200c.

I discovered Kali Iodatum on account of success using Similisan’s mucous syrup for my daughter.

One thing I used to do early on in my homeopathic usage days was that if a commercially available combination worked [such as in this syrup], I would check the back of the box/bottle.  There, you’ll find a list of the homeopathic remedies contained in therein, as well as the symptoms for which they are included.  I’d pick the remedy that I thought most closely matched the symptoms for which I was using the product, and then I would buy that remedy in potency.

Often, combination homeopathic products contain low potencies — often X potencies and sometimes low C potencies.  So if a combination homeopathic product is helping but not enough or for less than two hours between doses, consider selecting the best-matching remedy from their ingredients list and purchasing that one in potency [e.g., as 30c from your local healthful store or 200c from some specialty pharmacies, like Hahnemann Labs].  You might recall that’s my ‘ping’ method:  If a remedy works a little bit but not enough, chances are that you need a higher potency.  If it helps sufficiently but you need to re-dose in less than 2 hours, it’s also often a sign that you would benefit from the next-higher potency, if you have it.

A Couple of Stories:

My dad recently caught the flu from someone sitting behind him on a 4-hour flight.  The poor fellow was hacking and coughing miserably the entire time, and by the time my dad returned home a few days later, he was sinking quickly.  Had he taken Oscillococcinum or other immune boosters right then and there, he might’ve been fine.  But anyway, he took Oscillococcinum for a couple of days until the aching and fatigue and fog lifted.

Then the nasal stuff set-in.  He used a combination of what he had–Kali Bichromicum 30c and Similisan Mucous Syrup–in water for a couple of days, which eased his cough to the point where he considered it a simple trail-end of a cough and helped him sleep at night.  [In particular, the Kali Bich seemed to reduce the kind of prolonged coughing sessions, but the Similisan syrup helped him sleep at night.  So we combined them in 8 oz. of water for dosing day and night, if needed.]

Though my father felt that there was no more help to be had, I was thinking that he should continue pursuing healing from this, and here’s why:

–The guy on the plane was miserable, so it sounded to me like one tough virus.

–I had heard that people using conventional approaches were suffering a flu that was followed by 3-4 weeks of a miserable cough.

–It is much easier to maintain a healing momentum, to nip something, than it is after the vital force has been made dreary by weeks of fighting the virus.

So, when I saw my father, I gave him one dose of Kali Iodatum 30c and one dose of Kali Iodatum 200c.  He putt he 30c in water and felt only a little benefit.  So he put the 200c in water, and he was finally cough-free for 12 hours.  But he still was a little gunky, so occasional dosing was still required.

Tip:  One of the mistakes that we tend to make with homeopathy is dosing too seldom and for too short a duration.  Make sure that you really stay tuned-in to how you are responding to a remedy, and stay on-top of your dosing.  Don’t quit too soon, either!

One more story that also relates to combinations… My neighbor’s little one was suffering from colic.  She had tried everything and now was considering just about anything.  I said I’d put together a remedy for her, and I intuitively chose Carbo Veg 200c.  Meanwhile, she was headed to the store where she picked up Cocyntal, a Boiron homeopathic combination for colic.  She had to give him doses every few hours, but she was amazed at how well he responded to it and that he was able to sleep so easily, etc.  Ironically, it has Carbo Vegetabilis in it!  So, when she gave him the Carbo Veg 200c the next day, he only needed one dose and that was the end of his colic!

Sidenotes:  I read an interesting article in Homeopathy Today about the use of Polarity Analysis in cases of infant colic.  The author stated that typically one dose of the correct remedy in 200c is sufficient to put an end to the colic.  Although Carbo Vegetables is not an oft-cited remedy for colic, it is remarkable that Boiron selected it for inclusion in their colic combination.

Interestingly, Carbo Vegetabilis is made from vegetable charcoal and the “homeopathic corpse reviver.”  In my reading on the matter I discovered that infants who were blue or flat-lined or lacking that initial first breath and then develop colic often benefit from Carbo Vegetabilis.  My neighbor did not know for sure if her son fit that profile, but her labor and delivery were complicated and ended with a difficult forceps delivery.  I thought how beautiful of homeopathy and Spirit to know that and help this baby heal from that experience and its ramifications.

Unrelated Tip:  If life is rough and you find yourself feeling sorry for yourself, or like you are not worthy, or you do not have enough, give.  Do something for someone else in whatever way feeds your soul.

Get Ready for Flu Season!

I’ve written before about boosting your immune function and staving off the typical Winter illnesses.

Here’s my quick run-down on the extra measures I’m taking this year to try to keep our family healthy while germs abound:

Homeopathy:  I do keep some cell salts around during the cooler seasons, and we do try to get in the habit of taking them.  I use the bone-builders mostly [silica, mag phis, calc flour, calc phos].  Also, Ferrum Phosphoricum is a well-known remedy for warding off a cold that’s just beginning.  If you have a kid that is prone to ear infections [and you’ve already got them on probiotics, I hope, and maybe been to a craniosacral therapist?], you might wanna keep Ferrum Phosphoricum and Kali Muriaticum 6x in the daily routine during these months.

I’m keeping Oscillococcinum on-hand–I even keep it in my purse kit [and my husband’s work kit].  When someone feels really tired and super achy–that kind of flu–I give a dose to that person, and then everyone else in the family gets a small prophylactic dose.  I tend to put a dose of Oscillo into a water bottle [4-8 oz. of purified water] then, and give a dose every 2 hours only to the person with the flu already underway, and only the first day.  The next day, the symptoms guide the dosing.  [Miranda Castro’s flu chart is handy too, and she does also recommend Oscillo to stop a flu before it gets too far under way.]

Throat Spray:  You already know we keep a propolis-echinacea throat spray around, and that’s one of our first treatments when a sore throat commences.  Remember that that dry throat–drinking doesn’t even do the trick–is the beginning of something.  I’d spray then too.

Supplements:  We include vitamin C [Emergen-c for when we are actively fighting something and Acerola C from LifeForce–make it into a paste first then it’ll dissolve nicely–as a daily whole foods supplement].  I am taking a probiotic, too, though probiotic foods are cheaper and better.  And VitaBiotic has been good for the adults; in the past we’ve only used it when we feel something coming on, but this year I might try it as a weekday supplement.  I buy a lot of my supplements from Vitacost.com.  The oscillococcinum too.  We have just started an aloe supplement that we like so far, too.

This is what my shopping cart would look like, with a total of $109.22.  The aloe is $19.95 and sold on its own site.

21 Days of Fantastic: Day 9, Your Life Purpose

HiddenSymmetryBirthdays
Birthdate Chart for determining your 3 numbers — the last number is the one that contains info on your life purpose

All you need is your birthdate to know your life purpose?!

I heard an interesting radio show that led me to a book called, “Your Hidden Symmetry,” which I first borrowed from the library then purchased on iBooks [$9.99].  It’s also available at Amazon.

This book has been so helpful to me in the short time I’ve owned it.

If you have wondered about your purpose in life, this is a helpful book.If you are determined to fulfill your life purpose or frustrated because you cannot figure out your life purpose, this is an incredibly helpful book.  Even as a parent, this book was very helpful to me in knowing whether we had or how we could encourage our children along their life paths.

When you do lay your hands on the book, find your 3rd number and look it up in the relevant chapter.  That’s where you’ll see your life summed-up on 2-3 pages!

If you are nodding your head, nodding your head, and then completely befuddled by your actual life purpose, chances are that you really had no idea what your life purpose was.  This is a guiding light for you.

If you are reading about your 3rd number and nodding your head and then keep nodding your head, or opening your eyes wide and saying, “Oh, that’s why!” or other such responses to your experience and efforts being validated, chances are you already are on your path.

Either way, the information is extremely useful in my experience–but then again, fulfilling our life purposes is a really big deal to me.

And by the way, one’s life purpose can be achieved either in a career or outside of it.

Cover and the portion of the Table of Contents pertaining to Life Purpose
Cover and the portion of the Table of Contents pertaining to Life Purpose

There’s way more in the book, and all of it can help you figure out what your major challenges are and your strengths too.  Where you go in times of stress and some tools or alternatives that will be more helpful to you.  It can help you understand why everything has seemed so hard or why you start a lot of projects but finish a few. It can even help you understand the lessons that you are supposed to be learning so that you can embrace them quickly when they come along or recognize new opportunities to learn [hopefully through joy!].

As an example, I was just talking to someone whose 3rd number indicates that her life purpose is around appreciating and teaching others how to appreciate beauty and, specifically, the beauty of the moment.  At the moment, she is going through a major transition in her life and has felt that the lesson was all about trust.  But what if it is about staying in the moment?  I bet that would make it easier for her to do and learn, and it would push her further along her life path.  When I offered this to her, she felt that it brought greater clarity and can now stay more clearly in that centered place of trust and presence.  How beautiful is that?!  [And the ripple effect, in circles of light, will mean that more people will learn from her about staying in the present moment.]

Beginning summary of my life purpose.
Beginning summary of my life purpose.

Knowing your purpose helps you to keep this priority in mind, to recognize opportunities when you see them, and in my case, to feel more sure of the steps that I want to take.  For instance, people often tell me that I should write a book, a sort of memoir.  But I have few external credentials for being an author and think of memoirs as being of interest only for celebrities.  When I read that my life purpose is to release the wisdom in my bones, the wisdom of the ancestors that has been passed down, I felt more certain that I do have something to offer even without external credentials.

Ironically, my father has the same third number, as does my daughter and a friend of mine.  It manifests a bit differently in each of us, but it is interesting now to see, “Oh, that’s why we have these resonances.”

Looking at the life purpose of my eldest son has been very helpful, because his purpose is to change the world.  I gotta tell you, it isn’t easy raising a kid whose destiny is to change the world!  But we have tried very hard to support who he is, his interests, and to trust his path.  This book was an incredible validation for him and for us that his profound frustrations with “what is” are the basis for an incredible ability to help humanity.  But it also is a validation for the guidance that we have felt our son needed, informed perhaps a little more now.

For one more person who has been very successful in his career but also felt very lost in terms of knowing  his calling, his life purpose, this book was a big eye-opener.  The other descriptions were so exactly right, it was remarkable.  Then we get to the life purpose section of the 3rd number and see that some of it resonates but it is actually quite distant from his actual work.  We can see hints of relevant interests, career desires, etc., but he is so far from

So I do hope that you will find it at your local library, borrow it, get a copy for yourself, or maybe call in to that radio show for a live reading.

I’d love to hear your stories, too!  Meanwhile, enjoy!

Gentle Reminders App

Looking for something else, I ran across the Mindful Moon app some months ago.  I am really enjoying it.  A few times a day, a little chime sounds and a gentle reminder pops onto my iPhone lock screen … Or you can hop into the app for a nudging quote.

MindfulMoon

The reminders range from a suggestion to stretch or take a deep breath to quotes and adages intended to inspire us to live our best lives.

They aren’t too long, too deep, or too hard.  So they squeeze into life easily — or wait until I’m ready for them.

Enjoy!

Gifts of the Hive

MickelberryGardensI have long enjoyed the benefits of raw honey, propolis, and other gifts provided by bees.

Though I’ve benefited from Herb Pharm’s throat spray, I recently tried a new one because I hoped it had a sweeter taste my kids would find more palatable.  I’m impressed!

I also am impressed by the maker’s smooth lip balm and their salve.  So I am passing their info on to y’all!

Mickelberry Gardens is the name, and they specialize in products made using gifts of the hive.

The run-down of the few products we have tried, all of which have impressed us:

The throat spray was quite palatable and very effective–spray it on your throat at the very first sign that you are getting sick.  A raw throat, a dry throat, an early sore throat.

The salve has been very beneficial to my husband’s cracking heels–soothes the pain.  I wish he’d use it more and actually heal the heel!  He also tried it soon after an insect bite and found relief.  I used it a day or two later and did not experience relief.

The lip balm is smooth and soft.  It feels like it truly soaks in and moisturizes.  As a moisture barrier, it does not last a super long time–I’d use Weleda for that.  But when I have a choice, I always reach for the Mickelberry Gardens lip balm.
