Topical Homeopathic Treatment

For issues occurring on or near the surface of your body, topical homeopathic treatment can be phenomenal.  They will only work for purely physical issues, though.  If you have an emotional cause for your ailment, a topical won’t help.

That said, I’ve seen topicals helpful for a whole range of issues from bumps to nerve repair, hives, eczema, and more.  I even keep a few already prepared and ready to use.

When you are on a homeopathic constitutional, except if you are exceptionally sensitive, a topical homeopathic can be a great way to get the relief homeopathy provides without the possibility of interfering with the benefits of your constitutional remedy.

For self-care, here are a few decent rules-of-thumb:

Homeopathic remedies made from herbal and medicinal plants that are used for topical benefit are likely to be helpful in topical treatment homeopathically, too.  These include remedies like Arnica [muscles, soft tissue], Calendula [fights infection], Hypericum [heals nerves].

Dilute a few pillules in unto 8 oz. of water.
Dilute a few pillules in unto 8 oz. of water.

Use potencies from the X’s on up to 30c and 200c.

Simply dilute it in water.  If you have a sugar pill form of the remedy, just dilute it in [purified, if possible] water and apply it topically.  If it is an open wound, and you want to make sure that there is no sugar in the water, you could dilute it one time, dump it, then refill with purified water again and use that to apply topically.

If you have used a cream at the store that is helpful, but you do not have it with you or it is not helping deeply enough or long enough, you could try this:

Looking at the active ingredients on the back of the tube/box/spray, locate the remedy[ies] that seem to have the action you most need.  Make note of the potency and the name of the remedy.

If it works well for you but you cannot take a tube/spray with you etc., try to find the remedy in the closest potency and use that to make your topical.  If you’re really in a pinch, simply ask your Guardian Angel to give you an energetic topical dose of it!

If the topical you normally use works only a little bit [either not well enough or not long enough], try increasing the potency in the topical that you prepare yourself.

Tingle Tingle: When Nerves Need Repair

from the reliable homeopathic pharmacy, Helios.co.uk
from the website of the reliable homeopathic pharmacy, Helios.co.uk

Hypericum is great for nerve repair, old or new.  Think of it instead of Arnica for injuries to nerve-rich areas, such as fingertips, toes, and tailbones. But it is useful way beyond that for any nerve injury, new or old.

Specs

Select your potency, if you have a range of potencies available.

–30c for mild injury, 200c for a serious ow, and 1M for a really bad one, plus plans to go to ER if you can feel the pain traveling up your nerve paths toward the middle of your body

Put one dose of Hypericum in a cup of water.  Swath the injured area with the remedy water.  If it still hurts after a few minutes, take an oral dose of the remedy water.

Repeat as needed.

Old Injuries & Surface Injuries

I’ve helped a couple people with really old nerve injuries near the surface by using a topical application–one with no nerve feeling from the knee-down since knee surgery one year prior, and the other with no feeling on the side of his thigh [except the occasional horrific pains] since a tennis injury 12 years prior.

Dissolve a dose of Hypericum 200c in a handful or two of water [1/8 cup, 1 T] then apply it topically to the whole affected area.  Be generous:  apply liberally and extend a bit beyond where the nerve-loss sensation is.  Typically a benefit will be perceptible within 10-15 minutes, and one application typically is sufficient.  So wait another day to decide whether you’re going to apply again–it can progressively improve for 24 hours, too.

But Wait, There’s More!

I have found that when a plant is beneficial as a medicinal, the homeopathic form amplifies those benefits.

Does St. John’s Wort ring a bell?  I remember when it was all the rage for depression. In fact, it has been used for a whole host of issues in traditional medicines, many of which have been studied for scientific verification.

St. John’s Wort is the common name for the flowering plant, Hypericum Perforatum from which the homeopathic remedy is made.  Among the many uses for St. John’s Wort, apparently early studies indicate … that it can be beneficial for nerve pain!

Herbal Medicinals Get Amped with Homeopathy

Though we describe homeopathy as the principle of curing symptoms and disease using the concept that Like Cures Like, there is one itty bitty but important exception, in my experience:

CalendulaForms
Calendula Tincture, Homeopathic Calendula, My First Aid Spray

Herbal medicinals that are beneficial in plant form see their benefits amplified in homeopathic form.  Arnica is used as a component in massage oil, for instance.  Calendula tincture is widely regarded for its assistance in healing wounds.  Echinacea is an immune booster.

So if you find yourself disappointed with a tried-and-true medicinal’s performance in a given situation, consider the homeopathic remedy made from that medicinal.

I will give you an example.

My youngest, probably 3 years old at the time, tripped and fell chin-first into a sharp corner of a short table we used for kids’ crafts.  I keep a homeopathic combination in a spray bottle that I call First Aid Spray–it is useful for cuts, bumps, that kind of thing.  I pulled it out along with some gauze and dabbed the cut on my son’s chin for a while then held him through a nap.  The cut was closed and not swollen, so when my son was up-and-at-’em after his nap, I thought all was well.

However, when I brushed his teeth that night, I saw that the gum inside his mouth (inside where the cut was on the outside) was injured too, and it didn’t look great.  I took him to the doctor the next day; she suggested an Echinacea-Calendula wash and some oral herbals to boost his immune function but by day’s end, his gum looked infected and certainly no better.

So in a moment of inspiration, I grabbed my First Aid Spray, which contains three homeopathic remedies including Calendula, pulled his lip down briefly to let the gum dry out a smidge (therein allowing the remedy water to be more readily absorbed into his gum), and spritzed.  It typically takes the sprays 10-15 minutes to show results.

Within 10 minutes, his gum was no longer swollen or red, and the puffy white gash that had been on his gum just looked like healed gum tissue.

Here’s another example…

I’ve long used Ecinacea to support my immune system.

Echinacea Goldenseal Tincture, Echinacea Propolis Throat Spray, Homeopathic Echinacea 30c & 200c
Echinacea Goldenseal Tincture, Echinacea Propolis Throat Spray, Homeopathic Echinacea 30c & 200c

Way back in 1995 I likely had undiagnosed [my doctor told me it was in my head] mononucleosis.  Eventually, I insisted on testing and she found the titers for mono, indicating that I had had it and my immune system had tried to fight it off.  Having worked full-time during that period, I ended up with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and my immune system got finicky.  I typically needed 9 or more hours of sleep, but after that, if I ever got 7 hours of sleep or less, I’d get sick [like flu sick].  If I ever had coffee, even decaf, my lymph nodes would swell up and I’d be down for the count.  So I looked for immune boosters and ended up figuring out that if I took Echinacea Purpurea or even Angustifolia [but it had to be the root] and Golden Seal [a nice boost but the Echinacea was more mandatory, the Golden Seal merely helpful] at the very first sign of illness [typically a certain feeling in my throat], I could ward-off the illness.

I’d been using Echinacea [except during pregnancy and nursing] for at least 10 years, then, before I ever used homeopathic Echinacea.

I was sick.  Really really sick.  The most bizarre aspect was that no matter how many covers I put on, I could not get warm.  There I lay, with layers of clothes and layers of blankets, shivering in my heated house!  When I talked to my homeopath-at-the-time, John Melnychuck, he suggested I take homeopathic Echinacea.  I think he said this super-chilliness reminded him of typhoid, actually, and that I should take the homeopathic Echinacea.  I do not even know why I had that remedy, but for some reason he had sent me some previously so I did.  Within 15 minutes of taking it, my body was able to regain its temperature and I was swiftly well again.  I was absolutely amazed.

By the way, I now use an herbal Propolis Echinacea Throat Spray [now called Soothing Throat Spray] at that very first sign of throatly discontent–mainly if I catch a chill–and the results are generally quite good.

Flip Your Day, Find Your Way

I love teaching this stuff to my kids.  Then my kids turn around and teach it to me.

I had just taught my eldest son about how to turn-around a day that isn’t going well by saying something believable*.  I told him that instead of declaring what a rotten day it was, he should say something like, “I am so glad this day turned out to be so incredible.”  He agreed to give it a go, and it turned his day around quickly.  He still uses it regularly and with good results.

A couple of weeks later, after a whole bunch of messes in a row, I went downstairs to get something to deal with yet another mess, and my eldest son was in the kitchen.  Both of us were having a time of it that day, but while I was wallowing in it, my son was saying, “I’m so glad …”  So I joined in with him, and that was all it took.  Turned my day around!  [Which reminds me, say thank you for every difficulty too, and we will be well on our way to making the most of our days and our lives.]

When The Going Is Tough:  When you are using an I Am statement to turn something around, make it a statement that you find believable.  That is why I suggested a statement that he could imagine himself saying at the end of the day–it is easier to imagine the day working out alright in the end when you’re in the midst of feeling rotten.

When You Want to Live With Purpose:  That’s also why I like an affirmation that doesn’t detail all of the little things but focuses on the big picture, like thinking/feeling/visualizing all day that at the end of the day you could proclaim, “I really lived this day to its fullest!”  At the very least, it is a reminder of what your highest priority is–to live the day to its fullest.

Maybe your priority is to maintain your calm, find your center, maintain inner peace.  Or maybe it is to feel that you lived in the moment, lived with purpose, or found your way.  Or to serve God in all you do and say.

You can turn your life around with it, too!

Is Your Pain Physical?

This whole body-mind-spirit thing can be wondrous, confusing, or even whacky-sounding.  Sometimes, the connection doesn’t seem like such a leap–you know that your chronic cough started when you suffered the loss of a loved one, for example.  Emotional causes for things like the flu or a strained back can seem less obvious.

Here’s an easy way to tell the difference:

If you throw out your back or develop a stiff shoulder for no apparent reason or while doing something that is not that far out of the ordinary for you, it often has a non-physical cause.

Here are some examples, all of different people whose backs went out:

Someone’s back goes out while taking care of her daughter like she has done daily for three years.  All sorts of bodywork from chiropractors to cranial osteopaths fail to produce lasting results.  Finally, her homeopath treats her for her emotional state of feeling unsupported, and within an hour she can see a visible difference — and get some lasting relief.

Someone’s back goes out while reaching for something under the grill.  Hobbling in to a lunch meeting the next day, his lunch partner wonders how heavy those steaks were!  The homeopathic remedy that helps is Rhus Tox, known for issues involving ligaments and tendons, where the pain is worse on first motion and better with continued motion — and for mental exhaustion.  No surprise, this gent is at the end of a long and arduous project at work.  [Also not a surprise that it happened just before a weekend, when his body knew he could slow down a little bit to heal.]

Someone’s back goes out while throwing her ball for her dog like she does virtually constantly for her black lab puppy.  Her back is stiff and better for lying on a hard surface.  The homeopathic remedy that helps is Nitric Acid, which helps back pains like hers.  And people needing homeopathic Nitric Acid have some pretty deep trust issues typically going back to their childhoods.  At the time her back went out, these trust issues had reared their heads because she was trying to re-mortgage her house.

I believe that being aware of the emotional or mental issues giving rise to our physical ailments opens up additional possibilities for healing.  Just letting emotional pain see the light of day helps.

But if we can stay grounded and face the truth, it also can help us to acknowledge and release the causes of our pain.  The correct homeopathic remedy will help you do that, too, as will a host of other healing modalities such as EFT.  Sometimes, it’s even reassuring to know that it is … well … all in our heads.

Getting Grounded for Good

For most of us, grounding is beneficial because it keeps us calm when we could get overwhelmed.

It is a means of centering oneself, making sure we do not get caught-up too much in our heads, etc.  It is  a reminder that we are in physical bodies on Earth.  We even need to be grounded in order to work effectively with Spirit.

I use both simple “mental” exercises and gemstones to ground myself quickly and easily.

Of the Earth

I’ve long been drawn to stones, and healing gemstones are of such gentle energy that they seem to complement homeopathy quite well.  Just make sure you clear your gemstones of negative energy regularly.  To cleanse my crystals and stones, I put the gemstones I’ve used each day in a bowl of salt overnight, then change out the salt every couple of weeks.  I also do this with newly purchased crystals, just incase.

My favorite gemstones for grounding and protection are pyrite, black onyx, and amber [technically, amber is fossilized tree resin, not a gemstone].  I also really like Healer’s Gold a lot, and hematite is a common favorite.  [A bowl of tumbled hematite even can be used to clear other gemstones!]

It is easiest to wear these as jewelry–necklaces, bracelets, etc.  In certain circumstances, I also use individual gemstone pieces for grounding by tucking them into a pocket or waistband to bring the energy further out of my head [I can be in my head a lot].  I mentioned this to a gemstone expert once, and she said that actually black onyx is best as a belt [I haven’t found any onyx belts, but I bet you could make one].

Watch Your Step

A quick and easy way to remain grounded is to pay attention to your footsteps.  I had an energy therapist at one point who said the permanency of her work depended heavily on whether clients paid attention to their footsteps for several days after appointments.  She  also suggested imagining that you are walking barefoot on grass or at the beach or imagining that your feet are connected to the earth through the flooring because eventually all is connected to the earth.

Protect & Ground

The same energy therapist recommended  imagining a ray of light that came from Heaven, entering through the crown chakra, running down the spine through the tailbone, and connecting us to the earth.

You can protect yourself and ground yourself pretty easily and quickly in one exercise incorporating that idea:  Ideally, you’d do it morning and night.

Imagine yourself protected in a shield of white light.  I say a prayer, thanking God for protecting me in the white light of his love and protection.  I visualize myself being protected in white light while I am praying.

Then I ask that all negativity and dark energy be removed from my being, transmuted in His white light, and returned to me so that I am infused with His white light of love and protection.

Next I thank God for shielding me from all negativity and dark energy, and I visualize His white light shielding me thusly.

Finally, I ground myself by imagining my feet and tailbone connected to the earth.  For my daughter, she prefers to think of herself like a banyan tree, with her feet and tailbone rooted to the earth.

I do this process for my whole family, morning and night.  Sometimes I do an abbreviated version, sometimes more thorough.

Eat Well Even When You Don’t

Efficiency is my friend.  So is healthful food.  Combine them together, and you get my two favorite super foods to slip in to our meals.   But then there are the times when I make mango lassi for my kids using canned mango puree, too …Clearing Food

Clearing Unhealthy Food

Every once in a while, we are stuck eating something unhealthy.  In those situations, you might pull out a trick I learned from Donna Eden:  Clearing your food.  Just like we can clear our chakras, we can clear our food!  Hover the palm of your hand a few inches away from your food, then make counter-clockwise circles until you sense you’ve done enough clearing [I seem to do about 6 circles], at which point you make 1-3 circles in the clockwise direction to strengthen again.

[Donna offered this suggestion to someone who was living behind a convenience store and eating garbage from the store.  A year later, though his living circumstances remained the same, his health had improved dramatically.]

Dark Leafy Greens

My easy peasy way to make kale puree:  I picked this up from a friend of mine who used pureed kale in burger and lamb patties regularly.  Using lacinato kale, I hold the stem at the end/top of the leaf, pinch the sides of the leaf together, and rip the leafy parts off by pulling downward.  You can use spinach or any other dark leafy green if you prefer.  You can wilt the leaves first then puree them or mash them up or you can simply chop them to a fine chop using a food processor or perhaps a Blendtec.  You can easily freeze it in jars or quart-size zip-closure bags [just flatten the kale inside the bag, push out all the air before sealing, and then you can pinch off as much as you want].

My easy peasy way to use kale puree:  Kale puree [or even chopped kale] from one bunch of kale hides easily in marinara, fettucini alfredo, bean burritos, soups.

Bone Broth

All bone broths are super foods.  Chicken broth is mild and easy to use here and there and everywhere.chicken broth

My easy peasy way to make chicken bone broth:  I make mine using the carcass left over from a roasted chicken.  Ideally, I’d make a mirepoix [onion, carrots, celery] first.  However, on occasions, I have put the whole lot in together–a chopped onion, a chopped carrot or two,  a couple of chopped celery stalks, a chicken carcass, covered with purified water.

Bring it to a boil, skim the scum off the top, and then turn it onto the lowest low of the lowest-burning burner you have on your stove.  You should just barely be seeing a bubble come up in the middle of the pot.  I simmer it all day, turn it off at bedtime, and then simmer it again the next day.  Ten minutes before removing it, I add a bunch of washed parsley to give it a positive ionization.

My easy peasy way to use chicken broth:  Of course, it’s easy to use chicken broth in soups of all sorts.  The other easy way to use chicken broth is to give a nutritional boost to any grain, sauce, or de-glazing.  I substitute anywhere from 1/2 to all of the water called for in a recipe with chicken broth–for rice, quinoa, couscous, etc., it’s fantastic.

Here’s wishing you great health, with lots of time left over for more love and connection.

What’s in Your Wallet? Homeopathic First Aid for Your Wallet

wallet remediesIf everyone in the world knew how to use and had access to these few remedies, our world would be an easier place!

If you aren’t already familiar with how to dose using homeopathy, please read the As Needed post, which explains how to implement the homeopathic Minimum Dose.

If you carry just a single dose of remedy in your wallet, you can make one dose into many doses simply by dissolving it in a water bottle.  Ideally, you will use purified water and a bottle with a sports spout to minimize the addition of backwash.  Each teaspoon or little squirt or sip you take is a dose of the remedy.  If you have a topical injury [e.g., burn, sprain, bruise], you also can apply some of that remedy water to your injury.  Works like a charm, usually within 10 minutes — you might not even need to take the oral dose!

Onto the remedies…

Trauma–emotional and physical

These are the most crucial.  If I only carried one, I’d carry Arnica.  Two, Arnica and Aconite.

Shock, fright.  Something happens, you are shaken and cannot truly calm down.  Aconite.  Also called Aconitum Napellus.  One dose of 200c typically is sufficient, especially if you take it soon after the event.  If you only have 30c, you may need 2-3 doses.

Swelling, bruises.  You fall, you are in an accident, and you sustain an injury.  Arnica.  Also called Arnica Montana.  If it just hurts, take nothing or a dose of 30c.  If you are thinking, “This could be pretty bad,” take a dose of 200c.  Do not take another dose unless the previous dose gave you improvement which subsequently waned.  And certainly seek medical care when necessary!  If your injury was to a nerve-rich area, such as fingers, toes, or tailbone, turn to Hypericum where you normally would turn to Arnica.

Owies–emotional and physical

If you have space for a few more remedies, consider these, especially if you are prone or have kids who are prone …

Sprains and Strains.  If you or your kids are active in sports, it would be worthwhile to either just take Arnica 200 with you [or send it with them] or to make a little combination of Arnica, Rhus Tox, and Ruta in 200c potencies for injuries with the uh-oh factor.  Arnica for swelling and muscle injury, Rhus Tox for ligament/tendon injury, and Ruta for connective tissue/tendons.

Stings, bites.  Apis for red, hot, swollen stings [like bee stings] and Ledum for hard puncture wounds [like mosquito stings and even injuries at the site of injections].

Cuts.  Calendula supports healing and is known to fight infection.  Staphysagria is helpful for healing incisions or other clean cuts similar to incisions.

Burns.  My favorite is Cantharis, which always has worked if I take it immediately after the burn.  I also really like Hawaiian Moon Aloe for small kitchen burns and sunburns.

Sorrow.  Ignatia for ailments from grief [when you are so sad, you just cannot get a grip].

Ruh-roh–I think I’m gonna …

Food poisoning.  Arsenicum Album is the most common remedy for food poisoning from bad meat.  If you are terribly sick, you probably want to use a 200c, as needed.

Overdoing it.  Too much rich food, too much drink, even too much work.  Nux Vomica!  Way too much coffee or tea leave you feeling sick?  Chamomilla does the trick [you’ll probably need the 200c if you’re that sick]!

Carry ’em

Key Fob Kit .  Remedia makes a great little key fob that holds 3 vials of remedy.  Choose from their selection [Arnica 200, Ledum 200, and Nux Vomica 200] or get empty vials and fill them with your choice of remedies.

Little Envelopes.  I like to use what are called “coin envelopes” to slip 1-3 doses of remedy into a small space, like a pocket, wallet, waterproof iPhone case [mine pictured here], etc.

Here's a quick reference card you can print out and keep handy in your wallet or bag.

The Sooner The Better

The sooner you get to an issue, the better.  Pretty much always, and with every modality.  For acute issues and issues that have become chronic.

This is why I am a huge proponent of treating children [yes, even babies] who are having a tough time.  And one reason I carry remedies with me at all times.

Many issues result from some sort of trauma.  The sooner you remove that traumatic layer from your body and psyche, the better!  You will still remember it and be informed by it, but it will no longer have a hold on your body or your emotions.

We can even take a simple example like a baby who enters the world with a physical issue.  The resulting accommodations–logistical, emotional, in parenting–can change the parent-child dynamic, the child’s expectations of the world, etc.  The longer they persist, the more likely they are to be internalized by the child, etc.

It is exactly like habit formation—it is easier to prevent a bad habit than it is to break one.

And it’s a bit like making a snowman out of a snowball.

Prevent Trauma from Taking Hold

I like to keep Rescue Remedy [a Bach Flower Essence] and homeopathic Aconite [for fright, shock, trauma] with me.  I find Rescue Remedy and EFT helpful for milder situations, and Aconite 200c tends to be what I use if I’m so upset that I’m shaking or my child is so upset s/he cannot catch a breath to speak.  It resolves the fright so that we can deal with the situation at hand calmly, which has lovely practical implications!  It also heals the fear immediately so that it doesn’t have a chance to get a foothold.

I carry a single dose of Arnica 200 with me everywhere!
I carry a single dose of Arnica 200 with me everywhere!

The cause of the emotion, and the emotional state itself, are clear in that moment and the moments that follow.  That makes them exceedingly easy to treat right then.  But if you let “time heal all wounds,” without addressing the actual emotional injuries as well as any physical injuries, the physical injuries might heal while the emotional ones simply fester.  You might be able to look back and say, “It all started after that incident.”  And you might be able to recall the emotions that arose then.  But often we simply don’t recall all of those details or are simply in the habit of ignoring our emotions.

Prevent Sickness or Ailments from Taking Hold

There are numerous proponents of leaving fevers/colds/coughs/flu’s to do their thing, but if you simply do not have the wherewithal to do that, the earlier you treat them, the better your results are likely to be.  If you’re really in-touch with your body, you’ll know when you’re just a bit too fatigued or you have a vaguely sore throat, and you can boost your immune system with vitamin C and the like.  Homeopathically, you can take something like Ferrum Phosphoricum 6x or 6c or 30c when you are feeling those early symptoms.  If it comes on suddenly and with vigor, you could take a small dose [5-10 granules] of homeopathic Oscillococcinum to try to stop it in its tracks.

For physical ailments, I carry Arnica 200c with me at all times–I even put it in a waterproof iPhone case for the beach and pool!  It doesn’t cover everything, but it is the one thing most likely to help in most situations where you are in an uh-oh state!  In fact, recently on a family trip to the beach, my husband was stung by something when a wave rushed in while working on a sandcastle.  He took the stinger out immediately, and I gave him a dose of Arnica 200.  At that point, we had no idea what it was, only that it wasn’t good.  It helped tremendously, even though Arnica is not the most oft-described remedy for assisting with stings, bites, or the like.

Prevent a Chronic Issue from Worsening

For chronic issues, the sooner you address them, the better, in my opinion and my experience.  Chances are that you will need the help of a healer with that, so start asking around for some referrals!
